In response to the recent spate of building collapses, the Anambra State Government, through the Physical Planning Board, has launched the ‘Operation Show Your Building Permit’ initiative and begun demolishing illegal structures across the state.
Chike Maduekwe, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, revealed this during the demolition of illegal structures at Ogbo-Oroma, off Port-Harcourt Road in the Onitsha South Local Government Area on Friday.
Maduekwe mentioned that ministry staff faced harassment and threats from miscreants during their official duties, and were even chased away.
He stated, “Many people are disregarding the state government by constructing buildings without permits. Often, they avoid obtaining permits because the land is disputed or they lack the necessary documents.
“The government is focused on the welfare of the people, and developers must now operate within the law. Any building constructed without approval will be demolished, as numerous warnings have been issued but ignored.
“We have begun the exercise and will continue to enforce it in several locations. This week will see increased enforcement as directed by the Governor.”
The ASPPB chairman also noted that violators would be arrested and prosecuted, and that a grace period from August 1 to October 31 has been provided during which penalties will not be enforced.
