A Nigerian woman who gained attention for destroying her husband’s passport at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has publicly addressed her actions.
In an interview with @JejojaFamily TV, she explained that her drastic behavior stemmed from longstanding unresolved issues in their marriage. She stressed that her decision was not made on impulse, revealing that she had originally considered tearing the passport while in Europe but opted to wait until they returned to Nigeria to avoid causing her husband additional stress.
“These issues have been ongoing for a very long time. I was just going along with it until we arrived in my homeland, Nigeria, and it just happened,” she said.
Addressing her critics, she urged them to consider the underlying issues rather than focusing solely on the act itself. “I’m not a crazy woman who would just act like that without reason. I have my reasons,” she added, expressing frustration over the backlash she faced on social media.
She also described how her husband’s control over her social media accounts and email contributed to her distress, which ultimately led to her drastic decision.
“Do you think I would just tear his passport out of nowhere? No. I don’t have to do that. I’ve gone through a lot. There are always family issues. My husband doesn’t speak up. It took me a long time because he controls my social media accounts,” she explained.
“I suffered with my husband. I know how many years I’ve endured with him,” she lamented.
In response to calls for her arrest, she challenged her critics, asserting that those who understand her situation would sympathize with her.
“I know the pain I’m going through. Look at my eyes; I cry every day,” she said, emphasizing the emotional toll of her marital struggles.
The couple’s identities remain undisclosed, but they are believed to be from Edo State.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a formal investigation into the incident. This was confirmed in a press statement issued late Sunday by Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), who identified the woman as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, holding passport number A11990869.
The viral video shows NIS personnel present during the incident, but they did not intervene. Despite the woman openly admitting, “na me tear am” (I’m the one who tore it), she was allowed to leave the airport without being detained or facing any consequences.
After boldly confessing to the act, the woman took their two children with her and left her husband, who appeared shocked and speechless by the sudden turn of events.
“Bring my children out for me. If you want to sleep there, you sleep there. Come and go. This is Nigeria. Na here you dey” (You’re in Nigeria now),” she told her husband.
NIS officials consoled the husband, urging him to remain calm and composed, and surprisingly advised him to remain silent, implying that as a man, he should endure the humiliation quietly without speaking out.
