The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to various cases of suspected examination malpractice. This represents approximately 11.93% of the total candidates who participated in the examination.
The primary issues leading to the withheld results include the increased use of mobile phones in examination halls, despite a standing ban, and organized cheating in certain schools. WAEC has launched investigations into these cases, with results to be reviewed and final decisions made by the council’s Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC). Candidates affected by this can appeal through WAEC’s official channels if they believe their results have been unfairly withheld.
Additionally, the overall performance of candidates in the 2024 WASSCE saw a slight decline compared to the previous year. Out of the 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the exams, 1,332,089 (73.79%) obtained credits in at least five subjects. However, this was a 7.69% drop from 2023 when 79.81% achieved similar results.
WAEC faced several challenges during the examination period, including security concerns due to sit-at-home orders in the Southeast and industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as well as logistical issues arising from inflation and fuel scarcity. Despite these hurdles, WAEC managed to conduct the exams successfully across Nigeria and in some foreign schools using the Nigerian curriculum.
