Jose Mourinho was unable to secure Fenerbahce’s place in the group stage of this season’s Champions League. The Turkish side was eliminated after a 3-2 aggregate loss to Lille on Tuesday.

A decisive extra-time penalty from Jonathan David sealed the outcome. Fenerbahce had lost the first leg 2-1 last week and were on the brink of elimination until Bafode Diakite’s late own goal pushed the match into extra time.

Lille will now advance to the final qualifying round, where they will face either Slavia Prague or Union Saint-Gilloise.

This exit marks a disappointing beginning to Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahce as he aims to guide the club to its first Turkish title since 2014.
