The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take immediate action in response to the kidnapping of 20 medical students who were abducted while traveling to Enugu for a conference.
NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Benjamin Egbo, revealed this in a letter to the IGP, which was shared on the association’s X.com account on Saturday.
The letter, dated August 16, stated, “On behalf of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), I write to urgently bring to your attention the serious abduction of 20 medical students.
“These students, 12 from the University of Jos and 8 from the University of Maiduguri, were on their way to a conference organized by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) in Enugu when they were kidnapped.”
According to the NMA, the abduction took place between Otukpo and Enugu in Benue State. One of the abducted students was able to share their location via Google Maps, pinpointing the Oglewu Ehaje area.
The message was accompanied by an abduction note, further confirming the kidnapping.
Expressing deep concern for the students’ safety, the NMA urged the police to utilize all available resources to ensure their swift and safe return.
The statement further added, “Given the urgency of this situation and the potential threat to the lives of these young students, we strongly urge your office to take immediate and decisive action to secure their release.
“The Nigerian Medical Association is profoundly worried about the safety of these future medical professionals and believes that swift action by the Nigeria Police Force is critical.”
The NMA also offered to support and assist the police in their efforts to rescue the kidnapped students.
