Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has voiced concerns over the recent summons of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, by the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement on Thursday via X, Obi highlighted the delicate nature of the situation, considering Ajaero’s significant role as the leader of the nation’s workforce.
Obi remarked, “The anxiety sparked by the Nigeria Police’s summons of NLC President Joe Ajaero is understandable, given his crucial position as the leader of the nation’s workforce.
The NLC plays a key role in mediating between the Federal Government and various labor disputes and other national issues.”
He urged that due process be followed, stressing that while the allegations against Ajaero are serious, it remains unclear whether they pertain to his personal conduct or his duties as NLC leader.
“Extreme caution must be exercised in handling this matter,” Obi added.
“It’s not surprising that the government might attempt to view labor as a potential opposition force through autocratic means.”
Obi also called on the authorities to adhere strictly to the rule of law and evidence-based procedures in addressing the issue.
“Summons like the one issued to Ajaero are expected, but the rule of law and evidence must guide the process.
The labor movement should rely on its strengths to preserve democratic order and stability,” he said.
This follows the Nigeria Police Force’s summons of Ajaero on August 19 for questioning regarding allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and related offences.
The invitation letter, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, warned that an arrest warrant would be issued if Ajaero failed to comply.
In response, the NLC, during an emergency National Executive Council meeting, resolved to shut down the nation if Ajaero is detained or arrested.
The council urged Ajaero to honor the police invitation while expressing its readiness to defend him against what it sees as undue harassment.
