Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have detained Adejuwon Soyinka, an investigative journalist and the Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa.

Soyinka was arrested at Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday after arriving from the United Kingdom.

According to PUNCH, a distress message from a friend revealed that Soyinka was taken into custody shortly after his arrival, with no explanation provided for his arrest. The journalist has since been held incommunicado.

The message stated, “Adejuwon Soyinka has been detained by DSS officers at Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The incident occurred around 5:40 am on Sunday, August 25th, 2024, shortly after he landed in Nigeria on a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom.

“As of this report, no reason has been given for his detention, and Soyinka has not been reachable, as calls and messages to his phone have gone unanswered.”

When contacted, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya said he was unaware of Soyinka’s arrest and had no comments on the matter.
