The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday directed law enforcement operatives to locate and apprehend the individuals responsible for sponsoring and killing the policemen during a recent procession by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as the Shi’ite group.
The police reported that on Sunday, members of the Shi’ite group attacked police officers during their procession, resulting in the deaths of two officers, while three others are currently hospitalized and unconscious.
In contrast, the Shi’ite group alleged that the police killed and injured several of their members during the procession in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement issued by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the Inspector General condemned the killing of police officers while on duty, declaring that “those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.”
The statement was titled, “Police Condemn Shi’ite Attack in Abuja, Order Operatives to Hunt for Sponsors, Killers of Policemen.”
According to the statement, “The Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned the unprovoked attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, known as the Shi’ite group, on police personnel in Abuja on August 25, 2024.
“In response to the Inspector General’s directive, the police have arrested 97 suspects and recovered several weapons used in the attack.
“The IGP reaffirmed the Force’s unwavering commitment to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing his dedication to upholding law and order and preventing anarchy and unrest throughout the country.
“The unprovoked killings of police officers on duty are outrageous and unacceptable, as those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.”
Adejobi also vowed to fully investigate the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
He mentioned that the Inspector General extends condolences to the grieving families and wishes the injured officers a swift recovery.
Adejobi added, “As the investigation continues, the Nigeria Police Force is determined to uncover the full extent of this attack and prevent any future acts of violence against police officers.
“The IGP offers heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the fallen officers and hopes for a speedy recovery for those injured.”
He further emphasized the need for public support in maintaining law and order.
Adejobi concluded, “The NPF seeks the support and cooperation of the public in its efforts to maintain law and order, especially in the face of extremist threats and other violent crimes across the country.”
