The Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail is set to begin partial operations on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

This announcement was made by Kolawole Ojelabi, the spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in a statement released on Tuesday.

The trains will offer free rides and operate four daily trips between Oyingbo and Agbado.

According to LAMATA, the Red Line is part of the state’s Strategic Transport Master Plan, which includes six rail lines and one monorail.

This project also connects Lagos with Ogun State, where many Lagos-based workers and business owners reside.

Ojelabi noted that this milestone follows extensive planning, technical training, installation of security features, and a successful six-week trial run without passengers to ensure the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency.

“Starting from Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line will engage non-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before launching full commercial operations.

“This phase of partial operations, similar to the test phase of the Blue Line, represents a significant step toward realizing the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, integrated, and sustainable transportation system.

“The first phase of the Red Line, spanning 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo, will offer commuters a reliable and affordable transportation option, reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for Lagos residents,” Ojelabi stated.
