Tragedy struck on Friday when a fire engulfed part of a two-story building at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road, in the Ogba area of Lagos.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day, around 2:20 a.m.
It was reported that one of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5, Block 21, a two-winged, three-story building housing 16 two-bedroom flats, was affected by the fire.
A preliminary investigation by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) indicated that the fire originated from an electrical surge in the children’s room.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, stated that the fire completely destroyed the children’s bedroom, leading to the loss of property worth millions of naira.
“The swift and coordinated efforts of the Agency’s LRT, NPF, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service ensured that the fire was quickly contained and extinguished.
“Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the incident.
“Additionally, the victims and other occupants were educated on the proper use of electrical appliances,” Oke-Osanyitolu confirmed.
As of 5 a.m., personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and the Nigerian Police were still working to fully bring the situation under control.
