Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has denounced the threats made by a Canada-based woman, Amaka Sunnberger, against Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent.
In a video clip that gained attention on X.com on Tuesday, the woman was heard making anti-Yoruba and Benin remarks during a virtual TikTok meeting, speaking primarily in Pidgin English and threatening to poison individuals from these ethnic groups.
In response, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, identified the woman, and the House of Representatives called for her immediate arrest.
On Friday morning, Obi took to his X account to express his disapproval of these divisive comments, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in society.
He urged Nigerians to unite and focus on addressing the country’s challenges instead of letting tribalism divide them.
Obi wrote, “I strongly condemn the reported hateful statements and actions attributed to a Nigerian woman in Canada against other Nigerians of different origins.
These divisive remarks and behaviors are unacceptable in our society.
“As Nigerians, we should come together and tackle our shared challenges rather than allowing tribalism and hatred to drive us apart.
I have consistently opposed the polarization of our country along tribal, religious, or political lines.
“What does a nation gain from tribal or religious bigotry? Does it help solve our health and education issues, lift people out of poverty, or reduce the cost of basic necessities like bread, rice, garri, or yam? Does it improve our transportation or electricity supply? Does it ensure good governance? The answer is a clear NO!! Our focus should be on moving Nigeria forward, regardless of tribe or religion.”
Obi, therefore, urged Nigerians to reject tribalism and religious divisions and to work together towards a prosperous and united nation.
He added, “We, as Nigerians, must live together in peace and love and ensure that we elect leaders based on integrity, competence, consistency, capacity, character, and compassion.
This is the way to overcome our current challenges and steer the country in the right direction.
“Let us focus on what truly matters: building a prosperous, united, and equitable Nigeria for all.
We must reject tribalism and religious division and embrace our shared humanity, working together towards the new Nigeria that is possible!”
