To investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, just hours after an uneventful surgery, the Lagos State government has set up a medical panel to review the clinical factors that led to his passing.
The panel, formed at the direction of the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through the Ministry of Health, is chaired by the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanwo.
The panel has been instructed to submit a detailed report within seven days.
In a press release signed by the State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, the state government extended its condolences to the family of the late Mr. Waheed Ayilara, who died at LASUTH on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
The statement reads in part: “Mr. Ayilara, who was in Lagos for a medical procedure, passed away following surgery. His death has deeply shocked and saddened us all.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on behalf of the Government and the good people of Lagos State, offers his deepest sympathies to Ayilara’s family, loved ones, the Police, and the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State during this difficult time.
“The late Ayilara was a dedicated officer whose commitment to duty and exemplary leadership earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the communities he served with passion.
His unwavering integrity and dedication to maintaining law and order made him a distinguished officer.
“His death is a great loss not only to his family and the Police but also to the entire nation.
“We share the grief—and understand the anxiety—this news may have caused and assure the public that the Lagos State Government is committed to conducting a thorough investigation.
“We extend our sympathies to the family of the late Mr. Ayilara, the Police, and the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow.
May The Almighty grant you the strength to endure this painful period and bless the soul of Commissioner of Police Waheed Ayilara.”
