The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the establishment of guidance and counseling units in schools and religious institutions to engage the public and help prevent violence.

During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the House emphasized that this initiative would bolster the state’s ongoing campaign against domestic and sexual violence.

Obasa urged the introduction of educational programs that go beyond awareness campaigns to actively teach children about domestic violence in schools.

He highlighted the complexities of domestic violence, particularly its effect on children, saying, “We appreciate the efforts of agencies in Lagos State for raising awareness among residents.

However, no law can completely eradicate crime. We need to go beyond sensitization and help people understand why relationships that should be loving can sometimes go wrong.”

Obasa, now serving his third term as Speaker, questioned the effectiveness of interventions that remove children from their homes. “If we take children away from their parents, who will care for them as their parents do? Even when NGOs intervene and enforce separation, what happens afterward?” he asked.

The Speaker also expressed concern about the lifestyle choices of some young people, particularly teenage boys striving to own homes in upscale areas like Lekki, and young girls skipping school to earn money.

Mrs. Omolara Olumegbon (APC-Lagos Island I), moving a motion under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’, stressed the need to educate children about domestic violence.

She called for a revitalization of existing laws and improvements in sensitization efforts.

Olumegbon also underscored the importance of sustaining awareness and educating the youth, urging relevant ministries to intensify their initiatives.
