The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has pledged to identify and expose those involved in the production and distribution of the illegal drug crystal meth (locally known as mkpulu mmiri) in parts of the South-East. IPOB clarified that the ongoing violent crimes in Orlu are unrelated to the Biafra movement, claiming that drug traffickers, who have returned from South Africa, are behind the rise in drug activity aimed at destroying Igbo youth.
The group revealed that its intelligence unit has discovered approximately 10 factories producing dangerous drugs in Umuaka, Orlu, Imo State.
IPOB accused these drug dealers of operating under the protection of the Nigerian and Imo State governments, along with security forces, who they allege are shielding the drug production and distribution networks.
In a statement by IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, it was revealed that the drug factories were established by six individuals from Umuaka who had returned from South Africa.
These dealers, who own hotels and nightclubs in Owerri, allegedly use these establishments to distribute drugs to other parts of Nigeria, including Lagos, Kano, Rivers State (Port Harcourt), the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, and beyond.
IPOB stressed that the criminal activities in Orlu are not part of the Biafran independence struggle, accusing some drug dealers of falsely aligning themselves with the cause while being nothing more than violent drug merchants. The group also alleged that these criminals operate under the protection of Nigerian and Imo State government officials and security forces, with the Orlu area having a significant military and police presence.
IPOB claimed that these security forces are providing cover for the drug operations, implying government complicity or direct involvement in the drug trade.
The group issued a warning to those involved in the production and distribution of mkpulu mmiri in Orlu and elsewhere in Igbo land to immediately cease their activities. IPOB claimed to have identified these individuals and their accomplices, warning that failure to stop will result in their identities being exposed and decisive action taken against them. IPOB emphasized that its call for the return of Biafran businesses and investments never extended to criminal enterprises, such as drug production.
The group further warned that it would not allow Igbo youths to be destroyed by illicit drugs for the financial gain of a few. IPOB also suggested that the Imo State government may be tacitly supporting the production of these drugs as a covert operation to undermine the mental health of the Igbo people.
IPOB called on all well-meaning Igbo people to join forces with the group to dismantle the drug cartels operating in Igbo land, for the sake of peace and security. The group urged everyone to refrain from consuming or distributing mkpulu mmiri, warning that those involved in the drug trade will be treated as criminals.
It encouraged the Igbo community to support IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) by providing information on the drug networks, stressing that everyone must play a role in protecting the land from those intent on its destruction.
