Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has emerged victorious at his polling unit. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured 127 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC), which garnered 35 votes. At polling unit PU19, ward 04 in Oredo LGA, the Labour Party (LP) received 11 votes.
After casting his vote, Obaseki praised the electoral process at his polling unit and commended voters for showing up despite heavy rainfall. He remarked, “Despite the inclement weather, people have turned out in large numbers with enthusiasm.”
He continued, “It’s not even midday, yet the ballot box at my polling unit is already full, which clearly shows people’s strong interest and mobilization. I’m not surprised by this turnout.”
Obaseki expressed satisfaction with the smooth process at his unit and hoped the same would apply to the collation process, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful vote count without disruption.
He also acknowledged the significant military presence in the state, noting that federal security agencies were in control, with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) serving as the Chief Security Officer during the election.
Meanwhile, Labour Party (LP) candidate Olumide Akpata lost at his polling unit, securing 32 votes, while the PDP received 41 votes. At polling unit PU11, ward 06 in Oredo LGA, APC candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo garnered 19 votes.
Akpata had earlier urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that his positive experience at the polling unit was replicated across the state, allowing the people’s votes to count. He said, “The process here went well, but I hope this is the experience of every Edo voter. We will wait for feedback from our agents across the 192 wards and 4,500 polling units.”
Akpata called on INEC to maintain a level playing field, ensuring all party agents had access to collation centers to witness and confirm that the process followed the law and the electoral act.
He added, “INEC has no excuse. This is an off-cycle election, and they have the resources. All eyes are on them, and we hope they do a good job.”
Akpata also questioned whether the heavy deployment of security personnel in Edo was truly for the people or intended to serve certain individuals.
