The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate and unconditional release of voters, including its members and supporters, who were allegedly unlawfully detained during the ongoing Edo governorship election.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP emphasized that police intimidation will not hinder the victory of its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

The party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the arrests in collaboration with certain compromised police officers as part of a scheme to harass, intimidate, and suppress the people of Edo.

The statement reads, “The PDP asserts that this is part of the APC’s coordinated plot, in collusion with certain compromised police officials, to harass, intimidate, and suppress the people of Edo State, having realized it has lost the election.

A specific incident involved the abduction of a voter in Gestapo-style by APC-controlled gunmen at Uromi Ward 8, Unit 3, while the voter was in line to cast his vote. This cowardly act further highlights that the APC is panicking and has already conceded defeat in light of its impending loss.”

The PDP reminded Nigerians that the party had previously warned of such actions by the APC to undermine the election by terrorizing voters, especially as its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, gains widespread support from the people of Edo State.

“The APC and its compromised police allies must recognize that their game is over, and the people of Edo State will not be intimidated into submission. The electorate has rejected the APC, and nothing will change that,” the statement continued. “The PDP urges the people of Edo State to remain resolute in defending their democratic rights, votes, and ultimate victory in the election.”
