Security personnel were observed setting up roadblocks in Benin starting at 6:00 a.m. today, ahead of the Edo governorship election scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, security forces began stopping and searching vehicles at the roadblocks early in the morning and questioning occupants to maintain safety and order during the election.
Some commercial bus drivers attempted to bypass the roadblocks to avoid scrutiny from security officials.
A significant military presence was noted on the popular Ring Road, especially at Sapele Road, Forestry Junction, and various points along Sapele Road, including an armored tank positioned in the city center. There was also a strong security presence on Okida Road, Ekewaun Road, and at the INEC office on Ikpoba Hill.
NAN reported roadblocks at the Agbado Market area and along the Ring Road section of Akpakpava and Sapele Roads.
There were limited vehicle movements, with only a few pedestrians, likely voters, seen walking along the roads.
