The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into claims that some of its officers accepted a N15 million bribe from Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, to drop money laundering charges against him.
The inquiry was ordered by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede after a viral video surfaced in which Bobrisky, a former convict, made these allegations. The video was created by Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.
In a statement released Tuesday night, Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, confirmed the investigation and requested that Bobrisky and Otse report to the EFCC’s Lagos Directorate to aid in uncovering the truth.
Bobrisky’s allegations follow his previous legal troubles, including a six-month prison sentence for mutilating and spraying Naira notes at public events.
The EFCC has assured the public that the claims will be thoroughly examined, and the findings will be made public. If confirmed, these allegations could damage the commission’s reputation and its fight against corruption.
Oyewale emphasized that the EFCC has been a leader in the battle against financial crimes in Nigeria and reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration.
He said, “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken swift and decisive action regarding the bribery allegations made by Idris Okuneye (aka Bobrisky) against certain EFCC officers.
“In response to these claims, the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called for an immediate investigation.
“The EFCC assures the public that the allegations will be fully investigated, and the results will be disclosed. To support this investigation, the Commission invites both Okuneye and Martins Vincent Otse (aka VeryDarkMan) to appear at its Lagos Directorate to assist investigators in clarifying the alleged bribery.
“Throughout this process, the Commission remains dedicated to its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration.”
