The Federal Government is set to introduce a new education curriculum for primary schools on Thursday, aimed at reforming Nigeria’s basic education system. The updated curriculum, which incorporates moral values, is intended to address societal reorientation and revitalize the country’s social values, according to the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu.
During the launch of teacher training and sensitization materials on moral reorientation, organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in Abuja on Wednesday, Dr. Sununu highlighted that the new curriculum will not only enhance academic skills but also provide learners with an ethical foundation to positively impact society.
He stated, “The revised curriculum, which will be launched at the National Council of Education (NCE) meeting, is designed to instill values that address our orientation needs and foster social regeneration. Our goal is to nurture learners who are not only academically proficient but also emotionally intelligent, socially responsible, and morally upright.”
The Minister further explained that this approach will encourage students to engage in discussions about values and ethics, moving beyond conventional teaching methods. He also emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to continuously investing in teacher development to ensure educators are prepared to meet students’ evolving needs.
Dr. Sununu reaffirmed the focus of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration on prioritizing education and professional development for teachers.
In his remarks, UBEC Executive Secretary Dr. Hamid Bobboyi underscored the importance of the new program in guiding teachers to instill moral values in students. He expressed confidence that this initiative would cultivate responsible citizens and address the ongoing learning crisis in the country.
“Our hope is to embed values in our education system so that children grow up embracing them and responding to the needs of their fellow citizens and the nation,” Dr. Bobboyi said, emphasizing the key role the revised curriculum will play in achieving this objective.
