Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has contributed N50 million to the newly established Shanahan University in Onitsha. During the university’s official inauguration, Obi underscored the increasing importance of knowledge over oil, describing it as the currency of the future.
He commended the founder, Archbishop Valerian Okeke of Onitsha, for his visionary leadership, noting that education is crucial for the future of humanity.
“Our priority as a society should be preparing for the future,” Obi remarked, praising the church’s longstanding role in creating top-quality educational institutions worldwide. He urged the public to support the church’s efforts to advance education.
Archbishop Okeke expressed his appreciation to Obi, recalling his significant support for missionary-run institutions during his tenure as governor. He also announced free internet access for all students until January 2025.
Shanahan University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Obi Oguejiofor, outlined the institution’s ambition to become one of Nigeria’s top universities. He also noted that the over 200 first-year students are enjoying tuition-free education for the current academic year.
