The National Examinations Council (NECO) has issued a warning to school owners and other stakeholders against enrolling candidates for its exams by proxy.

In a statement released yesterday by its Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the council noted that such fraudulent practices often lead to identity theft and the issuance of fake results.

The statement emphasized NECO’s commitment to eliminating all forms of examination malpractice, outlining several measures to combat impersonation during its exams. These measures include the use of biometric data capturing devices, customized answer booklets, and the inclusion of candidates’ photographs and birthdates on original certificates.

Additionally, NECO introduced an online verification platform, NECO e-Verify, last year to confirm the authenticity of results. The council urged the public to be aware that any certificate that cannot be verified through the NECO e-Verify platform is considered fake.

NECO called on state education ministries and school owners to ensure that only genuine candidates’ personal details are used during exam registration. The council also disclosed that results of candidates found guilty of impersonation in the recently released 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) have been withheld as part of its comprehensive policy to combat examination malpractice.
