A student from Obada Idi-Emi High School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, identified as Ariyo, has reportedly died after being allegedly beaten by a teacher with 162 strokes of the cane for breaking a dustbin.
The incident was shared on Instagram by an activist named Adetoun on Friday. According to her, the teacher had brought a dustbin to Ariyo’s class and instructed the students not to damage it. Ariyo, in a light-hearted manner, responded that the dustbin was purchased with the students’ money. This remark reportedly angered the teacher, who then reported the incident to the principal. The principal is said to have ordered that Ariyo be punished.
Following the principal’s directive, the teacher allegedly administered 162 strokes of the cane to Ariyo, during which the student collapsed. Adetoun further claimed that the teacher and other school staff present at the scene delayed in taking Ariyo to the hospital, and by the time they did, he had passed away.
A senior police officer, who was aware of the case but not authorized to speak to the media, confirmed the incident. He stated that the situation had initially caused tension in the area, but the police managed to calm things down.
“We are handling the matter. The incident was causing unrest, but we were able to diffuse the situation,” the police source said.
As of the time of this report, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command had not yet responded to inquiries about the incident.
