Real Madrid is reportedly planning to boycott tonight’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris amid increasing signs that Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr will not receive the prestigious award.

Despite an impressive season, recent reports indicate that Manchester City midfielder Rodri is set to claim the honor instead. Paris-based outlet RMC Sport revealed that Real Madrid’s leadership, including President Florentino Perez, is “furious” and has chosen to withdraw the club’s official presence from the event.

RMC quoted Perez expressing that the club feels “disrespected” by the decision, which they believe undermines the achievements of both Vinicius Jr and fellow Real Madrid player Dani Carvajal, who the club argues also deserves recognition.

Journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported that those close to Vinicius Jr now believe he will not be awarded the Ballon d’Or.

“Everyone in Madrid has this feeling,” Hawkins remarked, suggesting that the disappointment is deeply felt within the club.

The Ballon d’Or is anticipated to go to 28-year-old Rodri, who had a remarkable season anchoring Manchester City’s midfield, helping them secure their fourth Premier League title in six years and leading Spain to a Euro 2024 victory over England.

Vinicius Jr is expected to finish in second place, with his Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham likely taking third.
