Today, the Senate will begin screening ministerial nominees submitted by President Bola Tinubu for confirmation.
NEWS REVIEW learned that the nominees—already cleared by the Department of State Services (DSS)—visited the office of Senator Basheer Lado, the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, yesterday to submit their CVs in time for the deadline. Among the early submissions were the resumes of nominees for the Ministries of Education, Trade and Investment, and Livestock Development.
In a statement, Senator Lado confirmed that the nominees had started documentation ahead of today’s Senate screening. The statement noted that the nominees were submitting required documents as part of the initial steps in the Senate’s confirmation process.
The Senate’s screening is expected to proceed in accordance with Section 147 of Nigeria’s Constitution (1999, as amended). Previously, President Tinubu had formally requested the Senate to screen and confirm seven ministerial nominees. This request was detailed in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Thursday’s plenary.
The nominees include Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi for Labour and Employment, and Bianca Odinaka Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Others are Dr. Jumoke Oduwole for Industry, Trade, and Development, Idi Maiha for Livestock Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata as Minister of State for Housing, and Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad as Minister of State for Education.
Senate President Akpabio announced that the Senate had referred the presidential request to the Committee of the Whole for swift consideration. He stated, “Distinguished colleagues, the presidential request is referred to the committee of the whole for prompt review.”
