Law Firm Withdraws from Case Involving Assault on Bolt Driver by House of Reps Member

In a surprising turn, the law firm of Deji Adeyanju and Partners has withdrawn from representing Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver who was allegedly assaulted by Alex Ikwechegh, a federal lawmaker representing Aba North/South in Abia State.

The announcement followed Abuwatseya’s public apology to Ikwechegh, who was seen in a viral video repeatedly slapping and berating the driver over a delivery dispute.

The altercation, which took place on October 28 at Ikwechegh’s Maitama residence in Abuja, sparked outrage nationwide, with calls for a thorough investigation. Ikwechegh was subsequently arraigned on charges of abuse of office, assault, and threat to life, and granted bail at ₦500,000 by a Kuje Magistrates’ Court. The hearing is scheduled for November 8.

In a statement released today, Adeyanju’s law firm cited the need to maintain professional integrity as its reason for withdrawing. “Following recent developments, we have decided to withdraw our legal representation to uphold the highest ethical standards,” the firm stated, reaffirming its commitment to justice for the oppressed.

Meanwhile, Ikwechegh has publicly apologized to the driver, the Nigerian Police, and the National Assembly, acknowledging that his actions were unbecoming of a public official.
