Gunmen Strike in Abeokuta: Former Councillor Killed in Cult-Related Attack
A suspected cultist attack claimed the life of a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government, Mutiu Akinbami, also known as “Egor,” on Friday evening near Brewery Bus Stop in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Eyewitnesses reported that Akinbami was riding a motorcycle with his son when masked assailants in a white, tinted Toyota Hilux shot him in the head. The incident occurred around 6:30 pm as the attackers reportedly trailed him from his residence in the Olomore Federal Housing Estate.
Police spokesperson SP Omolola Odutola confirmed the killing, stating that the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa mobilized teams to the scene and rushed the victim to Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigations suggest Akinbami was a known member of the Eiye confraternity and had previously held a leadership role at the Federal College of Education, Osiele. Arrests have been made, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
This incident comes just weeks after the killing of Adeleke Adeyinka, an APC councillorship candidate in Abeokuta South, highlighting a worrying trend of cult-related violence in the area.
