Bayelsa Schools’ Resumption Delayed by Flooding
Bayelsa State’s primary and secondary schools will remain closed for another week due to ongoing flooding. Originally set to reopen on November 18, the state government has now pushed the resumption date to November 25.
Floodwaters continue to submerge many schools, while others are sheltering flood victims.
The Ministry of Education extended the break to allow waters to recede, with concerns about the slow pace of the flood’s retreat compared to last year.
Permanent Secretary Simon-Peter Okene emphasized the importance of school safety, urging private schools to follow the state’s calendar and complete necessary preparations, including fumigation.
Meanwhile, floodwaters have displaced thousands across riverine communities, including Biseni Kingdom, Tombs community, and parts of Yenagoa, with many seeking refuge in higher locations.
