Impeached Lagos Speaker Accused of Impersonation by Ex-Majority Leader
Former Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, has called for the suspension of Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached speaker, accusing him of impersonation.
Obasa was removed as speaker on January 13, while abroad, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was subsequently elected as the new speaker. Despite this, Obasa has challenged his impeachment, alleging constitutional breaches. On Saturday, the assembly reaffirmed his removal, cautioning against actions that could disrupt legislative activities.
Speaking Monday on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Jimoh described Obasa’s continued claim to the speakership as impersonation.
“Obasa claims that he is still the speaker, which I think he knows means automatic suspension. I feel he should be suspended for that. It is impersonation,” Jimoh stated.
Jimoh stressed that Obasa’s impeachment adhered to constitutional provisions, dismissing arguments about his absence during the process.
“Obasa doesn’t need to be in the House to be impeached. The constitution—section 92, subsection 2—states it clearly,” Jimoh explained.
The former lawmaker also alleged that Obasa forced his removal as deputy majority leader through intimidation and coercion of assembly members.
“I wasn’t happy he removed me. I wasn’t notified about the process. He coerced members to sign for my removal, but I took it in good faith,” Jimoh revealed.
Citing financial irregularities, Jimoh urged anti-corruption agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC, to investigate Obasa, describing his policies as “anti-democratic” and contrary to due process.
