Police Drag Sowore to Court Over Social Media Posts
Abuja—The Nigeria Police Force has filed a lawsuit against activist Omoyele Sowore over alleged cybercrime offenses stemming from his social media posts. The charges, filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, accuse Sowore of inciting unrest and making false claims against the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
According to the charge sheet (FCH/ABJ/23/25), Sowore allegedly referred to Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP” in a post on December 13, 2024, and further stated on December 20 that the police chief’s actions would make another #ENDSARS protest “inevitable.” The police claim these remarks were intended to incite the public and destabilize order.
Sowore faces three charges under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, ETC) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024. His trial is set for Wednesday before Justice Liman, with his defense led by Marshall Abubakar.
The activist was arrested on Monday after refusing police bail conditions related to allegations of obstructing public officers and cyberstalking.
