Deji Adeyanju Petitions US, UK, Canada, EU for Visa Ban on Police Spokesperson Over Free Speech Suppression

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju and his law firm have petitioned the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union to impose a visa ban on Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer.

The February 4th petition accuses Adejobi of suppressing free speech and intimidating critics of the government. Citing multiple instances, the petition alleges Adejobi has ordered the unlawful arrest and detention of individuals for expressing opinions online, defended police brutality, and weaponized the law against dissent.

The petition highlights Adejobi’s public pronouncements that insulting police officers is a criminal offense, referencing cases involving musician Habeeb Okikiola (Portable) and nurse Olamide Thomas, who was arrested after criticizing government officials.

The petition also details the arrests of TikToker Destiny Ekhorutomwem and Charles Uche Ihedioha, allegedly at Adejobi’s behest, over social media posts. Furthermore, the petition asserts that Adejobi has repeatedly justified excessive force by police officers. Adeyanju’s firm urges these nations to take decisive action, arguing it would send a clear message against the suppression of free speech.
