NIS Introduces Contactless Passport Application System for Nigerians in Europe, Starting with the UK and Ireland

ABUJA – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched its contactless passport application system in Europe, beginning with the United Kingdom and Ireland. Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, announced the initiative, stating that it will significantly ease the process of passport acquisition and renewal for Nigerians residing in these countries.

The contactless system, accessible through the NIS mobile app on Google Play Store, allows eligible Nigerians to renew their passports without the need for a physical visit to a passport center for biometric enrollment. This innovative approach streamlines the application process, eliminating travel time and other logistical challenges often faced by those living abroad.

The launch in Europe, which took effect today, February 7th, follows a successful rollout of the same system in Canada on November 5, 2024. Nandap emphasized that this European expansion represents the second phase of the NIS’s commitment to improving service delivery for Nigerians in the diaspora.

“For emphasis,” Nandap stated, “the contactless passport application, which is currently available on Google Play Store (NIS mobile), is designed to allow Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting any passport centre for biometric enrolment.”

The Comptroller General reiterated the NIS’s dedication to innovative and efficient service delivery for Nigerians worldwide. The Immigration Service continues to explore and implement technological solutions aimed at simplifying and expediting passport-related processes for all citizens, both at home and abroad. This move towards digital accessibility underscores the NIS’s commitment to adapting to the needs of its citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.
