Kaduna Court Orders 15 Strokes of Cane for Reckless Driver Who Attacked Police Officer with Log of Wood After Being Stopped for Traffic Violation

Kaduna, Nigeria – A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna has sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 strokes of the cane for assaulting a police officer on duty.

The court found Aminu, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi, guilty of striking Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a log of wood after being stopped for reckless driving. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel ruled that the punishment would serve as both a lesson to Aminu and a deterrent to others. “This will help him understand the gravity of his offence,” Emmanuel stated before ordering a court official to administer the flogging.

Prosecutor Inspector Chidi Leo told the court that the incident occurred on January 29 at around 2 p.m. when Aminu, after being stopped for reckless driving, attacked the officer. The act violated Section 237 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
