Portable Granted ₦2m Bail After Facing Assault and Obstruction Charges in Ogun Court, Case Adjourned to March 5 for Further Hearing
A Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has granted bail to controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, following his arraignment on charges of assault and obstruction of government officials.
The Ogun State Police Command had declared Portable wanted on Monday, prompting him to surrender at the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department on Wednesday. He was later transferred to the Ogun State Police Headquarters in Eleweran.
Appearing in court on Thursday, the singer faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, assault, use of weapons, and conduct likely to cause harm. He pleaded not guilty. His counsel, Oluwatoyin Ayodele, pleaded for bail, assuring the court that Portable had become remorseful.
Magistrate O. L. Oke granted him bail set at ₦2 million with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until March 5. Nine of his aides were also arraigned on similar charges, including felony and obstruction.
The Ogun State Government condemned Portable’s actions, labeling him a “serial dissident and unrepentant rascal.” He was accused of attacking three state officials during an enforcement exercise in Ota, allegedly wielding a firearm and leading an assault on the unarmed officers.
In response to the allegations, Portable took to Instagram, claiming he was being targeted for political reasons and reiterated his history of mental health issues, stating he had been treated at a psychiatric hospital.
