Boat Tragedy in Warri: Five Confirmed Dead, 20 Still Missing After Fatal River Mishap as Passengers Returning from Burial Ceremony Drown Amid Poor Visibility and Lack of Life Jackets
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed a tragic boat accident in Warri South Local Government Area, resulting in the drowning of five passengers, while 20 others remain missing.
Police spokesman Mr. Bright Edafe reported that six survivors were rescued and hospitalized. The incident occurred Monday evening as passengers were returning from a burial ceremony.
Eyewitnesses blamed poor visibility for the crash and noted that many passengers were without life jackets. Resident Emmanuel Okoro described the scene as “chaotic,” with survivors struggling to stay afloat.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency responders and local volunteers searching for the missing victims.
