Saudi Arabia Confirms Ramadan Begins on March 1 After Crescent Moon Sighting, Marking a Month of Fasting for Over 1.8 Billion Muslims
Saudi Arabia announced on Friday that Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, after the sighting of the crescent moon.
With this confirmation, over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide will observe the holy month by fasting from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, follows a 354- or 355-day year.
Fasting during Ramadan is one of Islam’s five pillars and is mandatory for healthy adult Muslims. However, exemptions apply to children, the ill, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating.
For centuries, moon sighting has determined the start of Ramadan and the Islamic festivals of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Many countries, including Saudi Arabia, adjust work and school hours to accommodate fasting schedules.
