Nigeria Customs Arrests Two Suspects, Seizes Nearly 5,000 Loaves of Cannabis and 195 Bottles of Codeine in Anti-Smuggling Operations

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command, has apprehended two unidentified individuals in possession of 4,973 loaves of Cannabis sativa. The arrest, along with the seized narcotics, has been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution, the NCS announced on Friday via its X handle.

This operation follows a previous seizure of 53 sacks of Cannabis sativa reported on February 21, 2025. Adding to the recent crackdown, the NCS also intercepted and handed over 195 bottles of 300ml codeine to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, detailed the handover which occurred on Wednesday, highlighting an additional seizure on Monday, February 24. During this operation, a patrol team intercepted two suspects in the Badagry area, who were attempting to conceal 29 loaves of Cannabis sativa within a sack of rebagged rice.

Comptroller Bamisaiye emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, stating, “This success is a result of strong inter-agency collaboration. No single agency can win this fight alone; together, we are making a real impact.”
