NLC Rejects Planned Electricity Tariff Hike, Vows Mass Resistance, Condemns Consumer Reclassification, and Threatens to Shut Down Telecom Operators Over Unmet Tariff Agreement

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly warned the Federal Government against any planned increase in electricity tariffs, vowing to mobilize mass resistance against further hikes.

In a communique issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, the NLC also threatened to shut down telecom operators if they fail to implement the agreed 35% tariff hike instead of the 50% increase earlier approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The union further condemned what it called a “sham reclassification” of electricity consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), accusing the agency of unjustly moving consumers to higher billing categories under the guise of service improvements.
