Kano Assembly Passes Censorship Board Amendment Bill, Expanding Regulatory Powers Over Media, Entertainment, and Event Centers While Enforcing Islamic Compliance
The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Censorship Board Amendment Bill 2025, granting the board broader regulatory authority over entertainment and media content in the state.
The bill was approved on Tuesday following a review by the Committee of the Whole House and a third reading by Clerk Bashir Diso during Monday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.
Addressing journalists, Lawan Husseini, the lawmaker representing Dala Constituency, explained that the amendment empowers the board to regulate event centre registrations and enforce strict adherence to Islamic principles in entertainment activities. He also confirmed that the board’s official name has been changed to Kano State Censorship Board to reflect its jurisdiction.
Under the new law, all films, series, and serials must be censored and certified before being aired, while filmmakers are now required to obtain prior approval before shooting in the state.
In a related development, the Assembly has advanced the Kano State Water Users Association Bill 2025 to its second reading. The bill seeks to establish an association for irrigation farmers dependent on dams and canals, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity and improve irrigation infrastructure across the state.
