Lagos State Reaffirms Ban on Flogging in Schools, Emphasizes Counselling and Positive Discipline Measures
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its stance against corporal punishment in public schools, emphasizing counselling as the preferred corrective measure.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, reaffirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He stressed that flogging students for indiscipline remains strictly prohibited to prevent injuries, fainting, or even fatalities.
“Lagos has a policy, like other parts of the country, that forbids teachers from administering corporal punishment,” Alli-Balogun stated. “Instead, we have adopted counselling as a corrective approach.”
While minor disciplinary actions such as kneeling or cleaning school premises may still be applied, the commissioner emphasized that positive reinforcement is key to shaping student behavior.
He also pointed to poor parental upbringing as a major factor in student misconduct, urging parents to take greater responsibility.
Lagos State officially banned corporal punishment in 2022 and introduced the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme to enhance student welfare and discipline.
