House of Reps Orders Multichoice to Suspend DSTV, GOTV Price Hike, Launches Probe Into Frequent Increases Amid Economic Hardship
The House of Representatives has directed Multichoice, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription price increase, citing the country’s economic difficulties.
Multichoice had announced new rates effective March 1, raising the DStv Premium package from N37,000 to N44,500, Compact+ from N25,000 to N30,000, and Compact from N17,000 to N19,000.
The directive followed a motion by Esosa Iyawe (APC, Edo) during Tuesday’s plenary. Iyawe noted this was the second price hike in under a year, with the last adjustment in May 2024, sparking public outrage. He highlighted the lack of competition in the pay-TV sector, making Multichoice’s pricing decisions impactful on consumers.
The House resolved that the hike be suspended pending an investigation and tasked the Committee on Commerce to examine the frequent increases and recommend cost-effective policies. The committee has four weeks to submit its findings.
