House of Reps Calls on Inspector General to Deploy More Security to Edo as Suspected Herdsmen Kill 32, Spark Fear and Unrest

ABUJA – The House of Representatives has called on Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to deploy additional security personnel to the Okpekpe community in Edo State following a wave of killings attributed to suspected herdsmen.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Marcus Onobun (PDP, Edo), who decried the escalating violence in the state.

Citing a Leadership Newspaper report from February 26, 2025, Onobun revealed that over 32 lives had been lost due to attacks, including the killing of two locals in Okpekpe on February 24. Additionally, a violent clash between cocoa farmers and Ijaw militants in Ovia South-West left at least 28 dead.

Expressing concern over the growing insecurity, the House stressed the need for federal intervention, urging the police chief to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering to restore peace in Edo State.
