Nigerian-Born U.S. Professor of Accounting Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for $1.25 Million Tax Evasion, Undeclared Pharmacy Income, and Fraudulent Financial Transfers to Nigeria
A U.S.-based professor of Nigerian origin, Gordian Ndubizu, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a Trenton federal court for tax evasion.
According to a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, Ndubizu, a Professor of Accounting, co-owned a pharmacy company but failed to declare its earnings. Between 2014 and 2017, he and his wife concealed approximately $3.28 million in income, evading $1.25 million in taxes.
Prosecutors revealed that Ndubizu falsified tax records and transferred undeclared earnings to an automobile company’s account in Nigeria, which he controlled. He was convicted on four counts of tax evasion and filing false tax returns after a four-day trial.
His sentencing adds to a growing list of Nigerians convicted in the U.S. for financial crimes, including fraud and business email compromise schemes.
