NAFDAC Discovers Hidden Weapons, Including Rifles and Machetes, in Onitsha Drug Market Amid Nationwide Crackdown on Fake Drugs, Foils Break-in Attempts, Arrests Suspects, and Seizes 50 Truckloads of Counterfeit Medicines
Onitsha, Anambra State – The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered weapons, including two rifles, live cartridges, and a machete, hidden at the Niger Bridgehead drug market in Onitsha. The discovery was made by the agency’s security team amid an ongoing nationwide crackdown on counterfeit drugs.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, revealed this during a press briefing at the market. Represented by the agency’s Southeast Director, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Adeyeye expressed shock over the find, suggesting it could have been an assassination attempt on Iluyomade, who regularly holds briefings at the location.
The agency also thwarted two break-in attempts at a facility storing seized counterfeit drugs and arrested two suspects linked to the incidents. Despite security threats, NAFDAC reassured the public that the operation would continue, emphasizing that it targets fake drug cartels rather than individuals or groups.
With the support of market leaders, sections of the market are set to reopen as NAFDAC shifts to the next phase of the exercise. So far, 50 truckloads of substandard drugs have been seized and relocated for further action.
