Benin Traditional Council Suspends 67 Enigie with Immediate Effect Over Alleged Rebellion and Anti-Palace Activities Against Oba of Benin
BENIN CITY – The Benin Traditional Council has announced the immediate suspension of 67 Enigie (Dukes) in the Benin Kingdom.
Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Council, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, citing alleged anti-palace and rebellious activities against the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, and the traditional institution.
The names of the suspended Enigie have been listed for public notice and necessary follow-up action.
Some of the affected chiefs, including Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, have previously challenged their suspension in a Benin High Court, arguing that the Oba lacks the legal authority to remove them under the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law.
This development underscores ongoing tensions between traditional authority and modern legal frameworks.
