Chief Judge of Federal High Court Reassigns Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial to New Judge After Justice Nyako Steps Down Over Bias Allegations and Legal Dispute
Abuja – The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has reassigned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge. Kanu, detained since 2021, faces a seven-count treasonable felony charge filed by the Federal Government.
The case was previously handled by Justice Binta Nyako, who adjourned proceedings indefinitely on February 10 following Kanu’s insistence on her recusal over alleged bias. Despite an initial directive for Nyako to continue, the Chief Judge ultimately approved Kanu’s request for reassignment.
Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, confirmed receiving official notification from both the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, whose swift intervention he praised.
Expressing readiness to defend himself, Kanu conveyed gratitude to the judiciary and the public for supporting the legal battle for a fair trial. The identity of the new judge remains undisclosed.
