Lagos Govt Begins Emergency Vaccination at King’s College Annex After Diphtheria Outbreak Claims 12-Year-Old Student, Parents Raise Safety Concerns

LAGOS – The Lagos State government has commenced an emergency diphtheria vaccination campaign at King’s College Annex, Victoria Island, to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease. This follows the tragic death of a 12-year-old student, which has prompted some parents to keep their children at home.

A high-level delegation led by Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, alongside top government officials and representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO), visited the school to inspect key facilities, including dormitories, classrooms, and sanitary areas. The team assessed risk factors and reinforced preventive measures to contain the outbreak.

Prof. Abayomi emphasized the importance of hygiene and urged parents to provide consent for their children’s vaccination. “Because they are minors, we cannot vaccinate them without parental consent. The vaccine will strengthen their immunity and prevent further spread,” he stated.

Authorities confirmed that 34 close contacts of the deceased student are under observation, with 14 receiving treatment. Meanwhile, worried parents are calling for an urgent Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting to discuss concerns over overcrowded classrooms and poor sanitary conditions, which they believe contributed to the outbreak.

As the vaccination drive continues, health officials are urging swift action to prevent further infections and ensure the safety of students and staff.
