Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial to Begin on March 21 as Federal High Court Reassigns Case to Justice Omotosho Following Judge’s Recusal Over Bias Allegations

ABUJA – Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja has scheduled Friday, March 21, for the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to commence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learned on Wednesday that the case was reassigned to Justice Omotosho after Justice Binta Nyako withdrew on September 24, 2024, citing the defendant’s lack of confidence in the court. The transfer followed repeated requests from Kanu’s legal team, who alleged bias.

Initially, the Chief Judge of the FHC, Justice John Tsoho, had returned the case to Justice Nyako, insisting on a formal application for her recusal. However, Kanu’s lawyers maintained she no longer had jurisdiction, leading to an indefinite adjournment.

Kanu, extradited from Kenya in June 2021, is expected to enter a plea as the trial starts afresh. His case has previously been presided over by multiple judges, including Justice Ahmed Mohammed and Justice Tsoho.

With the latest reassignment, all eyes are now on Justice Omotosho as proceedings resume. (NAN)
