Suspended Senator Natasha Takes Fight Against Akpabio to UN, Alleges Political Victimization and Calls for Global Intervention
Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken her fight against Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the global stage, calling for international intervention during a United Nations forum.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended on March 6 after a heated dispute over Senate seating arrangements. She later accused Akpabio of punishing her for rejecting his alleged sexual advances. Speaking at the Women in Parliament session at the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting in New York, she urged human rights organizations to hold the Nigerian Senate accountable, calling her suspension an act of political victimization.
“I will not be silenced. My suspension is illegal, and I will continue to demand a transparent investigation into my allegations,” she declared, vowing to refile her petition upon returning.
Meanwhile, Labour Party supporters staged a protest in Abuja, condemning her suspension and demanding strict sanctions against those involved. LP National Youth Leader Prince Kennedy Ahanotu criticized opposition lawmakers for failing to defend Akpoti-Uduaghan and called for a fresh probe.
The controversy has sparked mixed reactions. While the Arewa Revival Project urged caution against politically charged protests, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan’s approach, accusing her of prioritizing personal ambition over Senate integrity.
Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan also distanced himself from the dispute, clarifying that his involvement was procedural, not a defense of Akpoti-Uduaghan.
As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the Senate’s next move and the international response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s call for justice.
