INEC Initiates Election Project Plan for 2027, Develops New Strategic Framework to Enhance Efficiency and Address Challenges Faced During 2023 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the formulation of its Election Project Plan (EPP) in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

A top INEC official confirmed to NEWS REVIEW that the commission is incorporating lessons from the 2023 elections to enhance efficiency and reliability. Updates to election templates are already underway, alongside the development of a new 2027–2031 Strategic Plan to replace the current 2022–2026 plan, which expires in December 2026.

The official highlighted that a crucial transitional document is also being prepared to bridge the gap between the expiration of the current plan and the 2027 elections. This document will lay the groundwork for the upcoming EPP.

INEC has produced EPPs for every general election since 2015. Following logistical and technical challenges in 2023—including issues with uploading presidential election results—the commission is refining its processes to ensure smoother operations in 2027.

During the 2023 elections, INEC deployed over 1.5 million personnel, 182,491 vehicles, and managed 93.4 million registered voters across 176,846 polling units. However, technical glitches delayed the upload of presidential election results, an issue later resolved through software updates.

As INEC moves forward, its focus remains on institutional strengthening, professionalism, and improved resource management to deliver a seamless electoral process in 2027.
