Governor Otti Signs Abia State Electricity Bill Into Law, Paving the Way for State-Controlled Power Market and Expansion of Electricity Access
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, granting the state the authority to regulate its electricity market. The signing took place at his country home in Umuehim Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South.
Governor Otti emphasized that the new law enables the state to oversee power distribution and announced plans to establish the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA). He highlighted that the 64-page legislation would strengthen government efforts to expand electricity access, particularly to the eight council areas not included in the Aba ring-fence power arrangement with Geometric Power Limited.
The Governor also revealed ongoing efforts to bring these areas under the Umuahia ring-fence and expressed hopes of supplying surplus electricity to the South-East and South-South regions.
He commended the Abia State House of Assembly for the swift passage of the bill and acknowledged development partners for their contributions. Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, hailed the bill as a milestone achievement, positioning Abia as a major player in the power sector.
Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, noted that the law is aligned with the Electricity Act of 2023, allowing states to manage their electricity markets. He assured that the soon-to-be-established ASERA will drive local investment and protect power infrastructure.
With this legislation, Abia State moves closer to energy independence, paving the way for economic growth and sustainable power solutions.
